Commercial Historic Renovation

The El Vado project was a historic adobe renovation. The original motel was built in 1937, and consists of three separate buildings. The project involved full restoration of the water damaged adobe walls and ceilings. It also included the installation and re-structuring of all window and door headers and frames, as well as re-decking the roof and pouring bond beams on each building.

The original motel lobby with a kiva style fireplace was restored to its original condition and now serves as a living room for the complex as the new Tap Room. This is the only location where the original dark brown stain color of the vigas and tongue and groove roof deck was maintained.

El Vado Motel is a Pueblo Revival style motel on Route 66, and was closed in 2005 when the buildings were abandoned. Roof leaks caused significant erosion of the stucco and extreme water damage to the adobe walls. Restoration on the El Vado began in 2016, and is now open as a Boutique Hotel, with a conference center, brewery, and food court. The El Vado renovation is a City of Albuquerque public-private development project, and part of the City’s revitalization plan for old town. El Vado is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the State Register of Cultural Properties, and is a City Landmark.

All work was done in compliance with State Historic Preservation regulations, as the building is registered as a Cultural Property.
